Agriculture is the cornerstone of India’s economy, with smallholder farmers forming the majority of the agrarian population. As a result of land fragmentation and the rise of double cropping, small farm areas have expanded, while large holdings have diminished. Despite a stable food grain area, India’s production doubled between the 1970s and 2000s, with smallholders contributing half of the rice and 40% of the wheat output. Shrushti is dedicated to empowering marginal farmers by introducing innovative, sustainable farming technologies, boosting their income, and ensuring their families meet essential dietary energy needs.

Our current interventions focus on:

• Promoting the efficient use of agricultural inputs and natural resources, such as land and water.
• Encouraging the cultivation of high-value crops that meet market demand.
• Supporting income diversification through horticulture and animal husbandry.

Focused Intervention Areas:

• Sustainable Livelihoods: Building the capacity of farmers, including women producers, to enhance their farming practices and income.
• Climate-Smart Agriculture: Introducing practices and technologies that increase crop yields, conserve water, and improve soil health.
• Integrated Themes: Soil health, climate-smart practices, crop management, efficient inputs, mechanization, water-efficient irrigation, horticulture, and livestock.
• ICT in Agriculture: Promoting the adoption of information and communication technology to enhance agricultural productivity and decision-making.

Through these efforts, Shrushti aims to empower smallholder farmers, ensuring they can sustain and grow their livelihoods in a changing climate while contributing to the country’s agricultural resilience.
