The Khushi project is a joint initiative of Women and Child Development Department, Hindustan Zinc Limited, Care India and Shrushti Seva Samiti.

The overall goal of the proposed project is to strengthen the functionality and quality of service delivery of government’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Program to improve the health and well-being of children below 6 years of age from marginalized Dalit and Adivasi concentration blocks- Bhadesar, Gangrar and Chittorgarh Rural in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan. The project spread over four years will enable existing government supported systems to provide quality supervisory support to field level functionaries in delivering a quality preschool education, health and hygiene program.

Goal: To strengthen the efficacy of government’s Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) Program, so as to improve the health and well-being of children below 6 years of age.

Sub goal: To improve school readiness, health and hygiene in young children from marginalized communities, participating in select ICDS run Anganwadi Centers in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan.

Objectives :

  • To strengthen early childhood education (preschool education) component in selected 574 Anganwadi centers to ensure school readiness, physical and psycho-social well-being of 3-6 years old children.
  • Promote understanding and skills of Anganwadi functionaries, family and community members to meet the educational, health, psychological and social development needs of the 3-6-year-old children.
  • Ensure quality functioning of select AWCs with respect to preschool education inclusive of health and hygiene practices, provision of routine immunization.
  • To strengthen growth monitoring, health care services, and feeding practices for early childhood development in select 574 AWCs.

    1. Strengthen health service delivery platform to engage with care givers and communities (MCHNs and VHSNCs).
    2. Growth monitoring standards (WHO guidelines) for children executed by all selected Anganwadi Centers to address malnutrition.
    3. Strengthen IYCF and stimulation practices through AWCs (early initiation of breast feeding, exclusive breast feeding for six months, initiation of complementary feeding after six months).
    4. Promotion of nutrition garden at select AWCs and households and to inform service providers and communities about nutritional value of locally available vegetables, fruits and cereals/increase intake of nutrition in their daily diet.

  • To strengthen the technical support system for existing functionaries (master trainers and Anganwadi Supervisors) through district, state and national level child development institutions.
  • To monitor attendance, retention and development indicators of children attending Anganwadi Centers.
  • Address the need based gaps in select AWCs with regard to infrastructural repair and maintenance to make it more child friendly and provisioning of small equipment.
